Spiritual Warfare: Identity Point #3 - Covenant: The Part That You Must Keep
God places His covenant on whomever He chooses, and we have already explored His choosing process in previous posts. Noah, whose name means ‘rest or resting place’ became in his generation the resting place of God and thereby fulfilled the mission of the LORD in his generation.
Noah saw something in the eyes of God others of his generation apparently had missed as Noah found grace in those eyes.
And now the eyes of the LORD search this generation for a resting place. Is it you? Do you want it to be you?
Participation is voluntary as God, the Creator of freedom, will only work with willing hearts. He opens doors and we choose to walk through them...or not.
This is what the LORD says, 'The heaven is My throne and the earth is My footstool. So where is the house (place of dwelling, feasting and family, the resting place) that you would build for Me? Where is the place of My rest? My power formed everything simply by an utterance', says the LORD.
'Here is what I pay attention to, the humble one whose heart is cultivated to receive, who is overwhelmed by the Spirit and excitedly trembles in awe at My word’ (Isaiah 66:1-2).
Your blessings and the power of the covenant are in God. He has declared them over you and because you are in Jesus Christ they are activated to you as a legal right that God has affected, for there is a legal right attached to sonship (see John 1:12).
It is the power and the covenant established by God by which you, as a Spiritual Warrior wage war, for apart from that you have nothing to enforce upon the enemies. However, with the covenant He has established toward you, you have everything.
But there is something in relation to the covenant that you must fulfill that keeps its power in continual effect on your behalf. Whether you do or not, does not change the covenant or the nature of it. Whether you do this or not does however determine its creating power of effect within your metron;
And God said to Abraham, 'You will keep (guard, treasure, observe and celebrate) My covenant therefore, and subsequently, you and your seed in you, proceeding out from you, in their generations.
This is My covenant that you will keep (guard, treasure, observe and celebrate), every man child (carrier of the seed) among you will be circumcised. And you will circumcise the flesh of your foreskin. It is the distinguishing mark, it is the signal response of the covenant (Genesis 17:9-11).
On man's part there is a signal response of the covenant. It is a sign that you are treasuring it, you are watching over it, you understand it and you are celebrating it.
It is when God sees the signal that He knows you are engaged in the covenant.
If the signal is not present then the covenant promise will simply pass by.
It is the signal that says, “Here I am Lord. Send me! Include me! I'm active! Don't pass me by!”
Circumcision of the unnecessary and desensitizing layer of flesh of the male reproductive organ was to be performed on the covenant participant.
Circumcision was the signal response and mark demonstrating dedication of the person and all the present and future procreative issue of his life to the covenant of the Lord.
It meant that everything generated out from him would pass through the mark of the covenant before issuing out from the person.
The part of the covenant kept by the recipient involved the surrender of all life reproducing issue and every seed to the power of the covenant.
In the New Covenant we are told that physical circumcision was merely the dim shadow image that pointed to the far higher and true circumcision.
This shift from natural to spiritual generated tremendous upheaval among the early believers particularly among the Jews who had based their entire culture and identity as a people on the mark of physical circumcision. It undermined the whole premise of an exclusive, nationalistic corner on God and who specifically would rule the earth, into total chaos for them.
The spiritual New Covenant circumcision suddenly threw the idea of God and His covenant open to anyone, to both Jew and Gentile, to both bond and free, to both male and female, to everyone from every kingdom, every tribe and every nation.
But this true, spiritual circumcision was clearly spoken of by the prophets, and they would have seen it had they not been reading the words with blinders on their eyes.
We find that circumcision has nothing to do with a physical cutting of the desensitizing, unnecessary penile flesh, and everything to do with a spiritual cutting of the insensitive reproductive flesh of the heart within the race of Adam in reference to hearing God’s voice;
Circumcise therefore the foreskin of your heart and no longer be stiff necked (Deuteronomy 10:16).
Circumcise yourselves to the LORD and take away the foreskin of your heart (Jeremiah 4:4).
In the New Testament, water baptism is that marked point in which we respond to the covenant of the Lord declaring that our hearts are being separated to Him and only Him.
It is the point of no return in which our hearts, out of which all the reproduction of our life flows, will be forever engaged with the covenant He has proclaimed over us by the grace of His love and His will.
We will live to the covenant and we will die to the covenant and our choice is permanent and forever as our dependence upon unnecessary and insensitive flesh is cut away, that part of us that was dull and dead to the Spirit’s touch, that part that formerly has hindered our sensitivity to the things of the Spirit of God.
By the supernatural operation of God it is being cut off and separated from us, becoming a thing of the past.
For he is not a Jew (one who is an honor and a praise and one who honors and praises) who is one outwardly, neither is our circumcision that is merely an outward circumcision in the flesh, but the one who is actually a Jew is one who is one inwardly and circumcision is of the heart, in the spirit and not according to one's physical engraving (graphic symbol), whose praise is not from among men, but whose praise is from God (Romans 2:28-29).
In whom you were also circumcised with the circumcision that wasn't made with man's hands by putting off the overshadowing deviation of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ, and this circumcision happened when you were buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the operating work energized by God, who has raised him from the dead (Colossians 2:11-12).
The wonders of the God’s covenant stream freely into the circumcised heart.
This circumcision is also related to the weapons outlined in Ephesians chapter six where our loins, which cover our reproductive parts and what is considered the strength region of the body, are to be girded about with truth.
What comes out of the heart that is circumcised to the Lord is what is true, not according to the world, to the naturally minded man, to unbelief or evil spirits, but what is true according to God and His covenant and His sacred, powerful, creating , reproductive words to us and through us.
